- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup water
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1 tbsp white or apple cider vinegar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add water, oil, vinegar, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients.
- Mix until well combined and smooth.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Frost as desired or enjoy plain.
Notes
You can top this cake with vegan ganache or your favorite plant-based frosting. It also pairs well with fresh berries.
